LEGAL FELLOW- Currently accepting applications, Fellow to start by April 2005

The Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law is a Los Angeles non-profit organization that focuses its work on the civil and human rights of insular minorities including immigrants, refugees, children, and indigenous peoples.  The Center initiates and conducts major class action litigation, often involving constitutional law issues.  The program also operates community-based and international human rights projects.

The Center is currently accepting resumes for its Legal Fellow position.  The fellowship lasts approximately one year and the compensation is $37,000 in salary, medical insurance, dental insurance, and a generous vaction package.

PURPOSE OF THE FELLOWSHIP

The fellow advocates for the rights of the Center’s target populations.  In return, through his or her duties and responsibilities (as discussed below), the fellow gains exposure and experience in a variety of legal arenas: litigation, training, advocacy, and direct services.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

1.    Applicants must be admitted to the California State Bar.
2.    Applicants MUST be bilingual in Spanish and English.  
3.    Applicants with website design experience preferred.
4.    Applicants must have strong research and writing skills.
5.    Applicants should have a strong demonstrated
       commitment to social justice issues.
6.    Applicants must have training and experience with Lexis.
7.    Applicants must have the ability to multi-task.
8.    Applicants with immigration law knowledge and
       experience preferred.
9.    Applicants should enjoy working with children and
       teenagers.

FELLOW’S DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
1.    Assist in development and implementation of training programs for legal services groups, community-based organizations, and eligible clients regarding the rights of unaccompanied minors, legalization applicants, and LIFE Act applicants

2.    Provide technical support and assistance to legal services groups, community-based organizations, and eligible clients regarding the rights of unaccompanied minors, legalization applicants, and LIFE Act applicants.    

3.    Assist in the research and writing of policy analysis, articles, outreach materials, etc., relating to the rights of unaccompanied minors, legalization applicants, and LIFE Act applicants.

4.    Provide consultations and referrals to eligible clients seeking legal assistance from the program in matters relating to the rights of unaccompanied minors, legalization applicants, and LIFE Act applicants.
    
5.    Coordinate with legal services organizations and community-based organizations the preparation of Special immigrant Juvenile Status visa applications.


SUPERVISION

The fellow has access to and is supervised by the Executive Director and General Counsel.    

Training and supervision will include: direction and guidance in all phases of the fellowship; written comment/editing of the fellow’s work product; personal meetings to discuss progress; frequent email exchanges; and suggestions regarding the fellow’s strengths and weaknesses.
